O'Neil was a participant in O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when she was in high school. She advanced to the top 100 round since the judges were impressed by her vocal performance. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges. But she was a victim of significant defeats during the Top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. Her score was within the bottom three as well as the second place. Judges were horrified by this and informed the crowd that Melissa was the best contestant. After giving consistently stellar performances from that point forward, O'Neil never again finished in the bottom three. With two other stunning performances on September 7, 2005, when O'Neil and Rex Goudie were able to make it into the final two competitors, judge Werner said that newspapers in the early morning would read O'Neil beat Goudie in order to be the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner and the most youthful winner in the competition's record . O'Neil's Canadian Idol victory was officially made public by Premier Paul Martin immediately.
